Preservation and Restoration

of the Coronel Pinto Ferraz City School

“Escola Coronel”, originally named “Grupo Escolar” of Ribeirão Bonito, was the original school of the city, founded on October 12, 1909. The building reflects the value that the new republican regime placed on education.
The Associação de Restauro da Escola Coronel Pinto Ferraz, located in Ribeirão Bonito, is working to ensure that this architectural exemplar has its characteristics preserved while following state and federally-mandated safety and accessibility rules.

Historical Recognition

“Escola Coronel” has an undeniable historical value, being listed as such by CONDEPHAAT (Conselho de Defesa do Patrimônio Histórico, Artístico e Turístico do Estado de São Paulo) in July 21, 2010.

Architectural Characteristics and the Need for Restoration

The building is a notable example of the eclectic architectural style of the 19th century known for the mixing of diverse styles along with opportunities for the exercise of creative freedom.
1. Classical and Symmetrical Make-up: The classical principle of tripartite composition (base, body and crown) was used. The floor plan was designed symmetrically to separate the students by gender (boys and girls) in opposite wings.
2. Historical Elements to be Preserved and Restored:
◦ Artistic Paintings: Elegant motifs decorated the inner walls. Some of these paintings can still be found beneath the layers of old paint as determined by research done in 2025. The restoration will ensure that this style is fully preserved.
◦ Flooring: The main corridor originally had traditional “hydraulic” hand-produced tiles typical of Brazil, with multi-colored geometric and floral designs. A remaining example of them seen in other Manuel Sabater projects can be found in a small outdoor area. Over the years through various remodelings, the traditional tiles were replaced by terrazzo tiles. The traditional “hydraulic” tiles will be re-installed in the corridors.
◦ Window Frames: Today, the building has steel frames in the windows. The original frames were made of wood, having two openings and glass panes. They will be restored.

The building has gone through renovations during the past century to ensure safety and accessibility. In the current restoration, an effort is being made to restore original features, so that this quality of eclecticism is preserved.
